Anterior Uveitis in Primary Care Optometry

Anterior uveitis is a common and potentially sight-threatening condition for which IP optometrists are now a central point of care. Safe management depends on recognising the key clinical patterns, grading inflammation consistently with the SUN system, and selecting treatment based on the suspected aetiology.

This article will cover the key clinical features and patterns of anterior uveitis, including how to take a targeted history and assess and grade inflammation using the SUN system. It will then explore appropriate investigation and first-line pharmacological management, with particular consideration of suspected herpetic disease, IOP monitoring and the importance of dilated examination. The article will also highlight when urgent referral is required, including suspected acute retinal necrosis (ARN), and conclude with the importance of working within scope of practice, maintaining clear documentation and communicating effectively with secondary care.
